A poem!

Although I'm still struggling with my own muse, I'm happy to report that my daughter has no such problems and today wrote a poem (well, a song actually) which was inspired by an Enid Blyton adventure story:

Dire dark deeds
On the hill.
People being held
Against their will.
In the dark, dark house
There's a moveable floor,
And danger!

Lovely poem! I think we've read that one, did it have a secret room where they were hiding an escaped convict?

It was a Five Find-Outers one, I think it was called The Mystery of the Hidden House or something like that - and it wasn't escaped convicts this time, it was stolen cars being stripped down and remodelled in a secret underground garage in a house called Harry's Folly.

I have not heard of the Five Find-Outers, I must look for them. We've been reduced to re-reading books we're really bored of lately.

I wouldn't bother with the Five Find-Outers if I were you, they are really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
I'm also struggling to find books for Freya - she's reading at the level of the Famous Five and above now, but so many of the books at that reading level aren't suitable for her in other ways, or else are about make-up, boyfriends, ponies and other stuff she's not interested in. Any recommendations?

We like the authors Anne Fine and Dick King Smith, but they both write books aimed at a wide age range, so some might be too difficult. The boys love Colin McNaughton's pirate books, 'Jolly Roger and the Pirates of Captain Abdul' in particular and John Coldwell's 'The Masked Cleaning Ladies...' books. These two are from Walkers books 'Sprinters' range and Oxford Univeristy Press 'Treetops' respectively, which are not exactly reading scheme, but aimed at building confidence in reading alone. Hope this helps.

We got a Five finder outers from the library so I'll let you know!

p.s the children were not excited by the Five Find-Outers at all and requested something else before we got to the end of the chapter!

Did you find any of the authors I suggested?
